Trade Secrets Dispatches 01: A Note on Why We Never Settle

As I sit here writing to you, I can’t help but reflect on what a week it has been at Charlie Locks HQ. I’m glad you weren’t around to hear my language—at its lowest point, it would have made a seasoned sailor blush.

Back in March, we set everything in motion for the return of our Deep Cleansing Balm, Neroli Cleanser, and the launch of the Bio-Retinol Sleep Mask. Everything was paid for and scheduled to arrive on April 22nd.

Last week, while chasing the microbiology sheets and tracking info, I was hit with the first blow: the delivery was pushed back to May 22nd. Then came the second: out of the blue, our manufacturing partner of 11 years informed us that a vital ingredient for our Cleansing Lotion was no longer available. Their suggestion? To accept an inferior "placeholder" replacement.

Cue an explosion of the aforementioned expletives.

I’ll admit, I was completely deranged for several hours. I was reeling from the lack of respect shown to us after an 11-year partnership, but more importantly, I was insulted by the suggestion that we would ever compromise our formulas.

This is why, as we transition Charlie Locks into the era of Green Science, we have chosen to wait for excellence rather than accept "placeholders" and unprofessional workflows.

I’ve been where you are—balancing the books, caring for clients, and relying on a back bar that has to perform. While the delay is painful, I truly believe that superior quality, fair professional pricing, and zero shortcuts are to be prized above all else. The "pain" of this wait is temporary, but the quality of what we put on the skin is our legacy. My commitment to you today is the same as it was when I opened my first salon in 1981: we do it right, or we don't do it at all.
